More than 300 legal professionals of Korean heritage will assemble in Chicago September 23-26 for the 18th annual International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL). Hosted at the Trump International Hotel & Tower, the international conference draws jurists, attorneys, legal educators and law students not only from Korea and the U.S., but from around the world.

“Representatives of some of the top Korean law firms will be in attendance, including Tier One Kim & Chang, the largest intellectual property law firm in Asia,” said Sang-yul Lee, a shareholder with Polsinelli Shughart PC and co-chair of the IAKL Host Committee. “It is a rare opportunity for the Chicago legal community – in particular, the more than 200 members of the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago (KABA), the organization hosting this year’s IAKL Conference – to meet and network with so many Korean attorneys of the first order.”

A primary objective of the IAKL conference is to promote communication and friendship among lawyers of Korean heritage, as well as other interested legal professionals from around the world. The annual global conference attracts attorneys, judges, law professors and students from throughout the U.S and Korea, as well as Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Belgium, France, England and other countries.

“As with every conference, there will be substantive continuing legal education seminars in a wide variety of international law-related subjects,” Lee said. Topics will include intellectual property issues, labor and employment developments, corporate governance, international arbitration and investor-state disputes; ethics and professional responsibility, among others.

American Bar Association President Stephen N. Zack and International Bar Association President Fernando Peláez-Pier will open the conference with remarks on Friday (September 24). The closing banquet on Saturday at the Chicago Art Institute will be highlighted by a performance of the nationally acclaimed Chicago Children’s Choir under the direction of Josephine Lee.
