KC Business magazine selected three Polsinelli Shughart attorneys as 2011 Rising Stars. Congratulations to James Humphrey, Gregory Kratofil and Korb Maxwell who were selected for this honor. The Rising Stars program recognizes “outstanding individuals under the age of 40 who exemplify hard work, dedication to corporate success and to the community.” Nominations were solicited from companies, and reviewed and evaluated by an independent panel of judges. The trio, along with other nominees, were honored at an event in Overland Park February 17.

About the nominees:

James M. Humphrey is a shareholder with the firm and has more than ten years of experience, which includes business and appellate litigation; antitrust; shareholder disputes; officer and director liability; over five years of experience defending legal malpractice claims; class actions; contract disputes, insurance coverage litigation; fraud; and RICO claims. He also has extensive products liability and personal injury experience, including consumer products, industrial products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and electrical accidents.

Before joining the firm, Humphrey served as a law clerk to the Honorable Gary A. Fenner, United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. He has made numerous appearances in Missouri’s federal and state courts, as well as various other jurisdictions, and has represented clients located throughout the United States. Humphrey was selected as a Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2008-2010 for Business Litigation.

Greg Kratofil provides legal counsel on a wide variety of matters for today’s technology companies, including startup formation and venture capital financing, intellectual property based joint ventures, copyright and trademark protection, software development and licensing, as well as drafting and reviewing various hosting, consulting, procurement, network and systems development contracts. 

Kratofil's experience includes complex technology and commercial contracting transactions, technology and software-based mergers and acquisitions, as well as compliance with GLB, HIPAA, state privacy breach notification laws and other privacy directives. Drawing on his technology and business background, Kratofil takes on the role as general counsel for a number of the region’s new and developing technology businesses.

Economic development projects are the focus of Korb W. Maxwell’s practice. Mr. Maxwell’s area of concentration is on large-scale development and employment projects that utilize complex federal, state, and municipal development incentives. His experience in working with municipalities and states in structuring and implementing incentive packages provides him with insight and practical experience that benefit his clients’ real estate, economic or employment projects. 

Maxwell has significant experience with STAR Bonds, tax increment financing, transportation development districts, community improvement districts, special benefit districts, neighborhood revitalization areas, real and personal property tax exemptions and numerous federal and state tax credit programs. Maxwell regularly appears before municipal governing bodies, on behalf of his development clients, in jurisdictions throughout the Midwest. He has negotiated, secured approval of and documented hundreds of millions of dollars in incentives for his clients’ projects in every asset class of real estate.
