Former Missouri appeals court chief judge Edwin H. Smith of Country Club Village in Andrew County was honored Friday with the highest award given by the Northwest Missouri Press Association. The James C. Kirkpatrick Award, given in recognition of service to the state, was presented to Mr. Smith at a luncheon at the press group’s 122nd annual convention. The event was held on Missouri Western’s campus. Among his career accomplishments, he served nearly 12 years from 1995 to 2007 as a member of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. The final two years he was chief judge of the court.
Earlier Mr. Smith served nearly seven years from 1989 to 1995 as presiding judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit (Andrew and Buchanan counties). Before that he served 10 years from 1979 to 1988 as the last magistrate and the first associate circuit judge of Andrew County. He was elected to his first judge position at age 26, little more than a year after graduation from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.
