The Lawyers Association of Kansas City (LAKC) elected litigation attorney James M. Humphrey as president during the Whitaker Award Luncheon and Annual Meeting at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, May 23, 2012. Humphrey, who is a shareholder at national law firm Polsinelli, will serve a one-year term following previous leadership roles as vice-president and secretary. Humphrey joins a long list of legal luminaries at Polsinelli, including Jack Kilroy, Jr. and Russ Jones, who have served as LAKC presidents.

“Being a lawyer is not only about being committed to your clients but also to your community,” said Humphrey. “It’s deeply rewarding to carry out the mission of the LAKC and a tradition of our firm.”

Highly recognized in his field, Humphrey advises clients in commercial litigation and legal malpractice defense. He has extensive experience in antitrust, shareholder disputes, officer and director liability, class action, contract disputes, insurance coverage and RICO claims. Before joining the firm, Humphrey served as a law clerk to the Honorable Gary A. Fenner, United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. He has made numerous appearances in Missouri’s federal and state courts, as well as various other jurisdictions, and has represented clients located throughout the United States.

Humphrey earned his law degree from Creighton University, magna cum laude, and earned his bachelor of science, cum laude, in Criminal Justice and Criminology from Metropolitan State College in Denver. He was selected for inclusion as a Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2008-2011 for Business Litigation, and chosen as an Up and Coming Lawyer by Missouri Lawyers Weekly in 2009. Humphrey is a member of the American Bar Association, the Missouri Bar, the Defense Research Institute, the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.

Humphrey says he is looking forward to helping drive LAKC notable events such as the Santa’s Snow Ball, which benefits area homeless, and the Skippy & Skivvies Drive which helps low income families served by Operation Breakthrough. The LAKC will hold its annual Judicial Reception June 7.

“The LAKC emphasizes public service and continuing legal education,” stated Humphrey. “But beyond that, being a member of the LAKC is also an opportunity to get to know your colleagues in town. I’m very excited about my leadership role and will use the time to increase membership and awareness about our organization.”
