The national law firm of Polsinelli Shughart PC expands its Health Care practice with the addition of Attorneys Emily C. Tremmel and Heidi R. Slaw. Tremmel joins the firm as counsel, and will assist clients on corporate and regulatory matters. Slaw will practice as an associate and will advise clients on regulatory and compliance matters as they relate to transactions and operations of health systems.
Both Tremmel and Slaw have a broad understanding of issues affecting the health care industry, including the passage of health care reform, and are members of the American Health Lawyers Association. They join a team of nearly 40 health care business law attorneys at Polsinelli Shughart and are part of the firm’s strategic plan to grow the Chicago office.

Prior to joining Polsinelli Shughart, Tremmel practiced at Chicago’s McGuire Woods. Slaw worked at Northwestern Memorial Hospital as an extern in the Office of General Counsel and as an associate at Chicago’s Knell & Poulos law firm.
Tremmel focuses her practice on general representation of various types of health care providers, including hospitals, health systems, multi and single specialty medical practices, ambulatory surgery centers, dialysis facilities and other health care industry entrepreneurs. She counsels clients on corporate and regulatory matters, including health care fraud and abuse, physician self-referral, general compliance, professional standards, governmental reimbursement, facility licensure and accreditation, entity formation, mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures.
Tremmel earned her J.D. degree from Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington in 1996 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Affairs from Indiana in 1989. She is a member of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys and the Chicago Bar Association, for which she serves as chair of the CBA’s Medical-Legal Relations Committee.
Slaw focuses her practice on complex health care regulatory and compliance issues as they relate to transactions and operations of health systems, hospitals, physicians and other health care providers and vendors. She is a member of the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, and Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys.
Slaw earned her J.D. in 2007 from Chicago-Kent College of Law and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Butler University in 2002. She currently is a candidate for an LL.M Health Law degree from Loyola University.
