energy, animal health, plant sciences, and human health arenas to allow these states to compete, not necessarily with each other, but on a national and international basis to develop, retain and attract top quality scientists, companies, and executives.
In addition to industry briefings at the Danforth Plant Science Center, participants in the DGA conference were involved in two roundtable discussions. The first roundtable featured the Governors in a lively debate of the pending federal legislation relating to the regulation of biosimilars, which are copies of innovative biologic drugs. Participants in this roundtable included representatives of major pharmaceutical companies and other national participants in the life sciences industry. To support this roundtable topic, a White Paper titled "Follow-On Biologics Regulatory Debate" was prepared by Pat Woolley, chair of Polsinelli Shughart’s intellectual property group. The second of the two roundtable discussions, both of which were moderated by Governor Nixon, focused on how the states in the Midwest region can enhance their position in the future of the life science industry. Leaders of national and regional industry trade groups participated in this roundtable, in addition to representatives from other major industry players. Kevin Sweeney, chair of Polsinelli Shughart’s life sciences group also participated in this panel, which covered a wide range of issues regarding the future of the industry. Mr. Sweeney’s opening comments from this roundtable discussion can be found here. For a free copy of his White Paper on the topic, "State Investment in Life Science Industry," click here.
