Each of the four attorneys in the top-ranked Global Franchise and Supply Network practice at Polsinelli has been recognized by Franchise Times Magazine on its 2019 Legal Eagles list. The annual ranking recognizes the top lawyers with deep experience working in the franchise sector. According to Franchise Times Magazine, the list includes franchise lawyers at the top of their game that provide outstanding service to clients and the industry. Attorneys were selected based on the number and quality of nominations.

Joyce Mazero and Len MacPhee co-chair the practice, which is based in both Denver and Dallas and known for sharing its clients’ entrepreneurial focus and delivering responsive, practical, creative and focused legal counsel to companies in domestic and international franchise, supply chain and distribution matters. Polsinelli’s Global Franchise and Supply Network been recognized as a preeminent practice in the franchise and supply chain business and legal communities, with a particular focus on the restaurant and food service industries.

Mazero represents national and global product and service-based companies leading them through major initiatives. She supports clients in structuring franchise and distribution networks, purchasing cooperatives and buying groups, negotiating strategic alliances, joint ventures, domestic and international licensing, franchising, manufacturing, retail and logistics deals. She also supports the buying and selling franchise chains, food service providers and manufacturing plants, and litigates franchise, intellectual property and distribution disputes around the world.

A 12-time recipient of Chambers USA Franchising recognition as “Top-Ranked” from the leading legal industry rankings organization, Mazero has been honored with numerous industry accolades from Chambers Global, Best Lawyers in America, Best Lawyers in Dallas, Best Women Lawyers in Dallas, Texas Super Lawyers and more. She is also co-author of Franchise Management for Dummies and serves on the Advisory Council to the National Restaurant Association’s Supply Chain Executive Group and on the board of the College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism of the University of North Texas and is a past board member of the International Franchise Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. 

MacPhee focuses on analyzing and advising clients on significant supply network matters, including on a pre-litigation basis. He frequently represents national and global clients in structuring and negotiating business strategies for the rollout of products and diverse distribution methods on global and national supply network franchise and distribution matters, as well as transitions and wind-down of franchise and distribution systems.  

MacPhee has been recognized as Denver Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers® Franchise Law in 2014, 2017, and again in 2019. He has additionally received top honors from Colorado Super Lawyers and Chambers USA. He is an active member of the International Franchise Association, the Franchise Business Network and the American Bar Association Forum Committee on Franchising. He currently serves as vice-chair of the IFA’s 2019 Legal Symposium, and is a frequent speaker and writer on supply chain, franchise and distribution matters.

In addition to the co-chairs, Polsinelli Shareholder Jess Dance and Counsel William W. Sentell III were also individually recognized on the Legal Eagles list.

Dance, a former assistant attorney general, has been honored repeatedly by Colorado Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in Franchise & Dealership and was a member of the group given Colorado Lawyer Committee's Team of the Year Award in 2012. He is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, the International Franchise Association, and the American Bar Association’s Forum on Franchising. 

Sentell frequently writes about legal issues affecting the franchise community that have appeared in several leading academic and industry publications. Sentell was recognized for his article, “Having It Both Ways: Can a Franchisor Insist on Arbitration and Litigation?” which published in the Winter 2018 issue of the ABA publication The Franchise Lawyer. He was also honored as a Louisiana Rising Star by Super Lawyers® in Franchise/Dealership from 2012 through 2017.

The team has organized and managed the negotiation of development, franchise, licensing and supply chain arrangements in over 60 countries including the further development of such brands as Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze Island Grille, Capital Grille, Del Frisco’s, Ruby Tuesday, , Sola Salon Studios, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Raising Cane’s and Dave & Buster’s, Tempur Sealy, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, PostNet, Alphagraphics, WellBiz  and Highlander Capital. 

The attorneys are also experienced in establishing and managing purchasing groups, cooperatives, joint ventures, strategic alliances and sales representative systems in the foodservice and retail industries. Our representation has included Dine Equity (Applebee’s and IHOP brands), AT&T, Planet Fitness, Interstate Battery, Tempur Sealy and numerous other start-up or bolt-on internal franchisor-driven purchasing arrangements.
