Polsinelli Shughart welcomes Lisa J. Acevedo to the firm’s Health Care Practice as a shareholder offering clients significant experience in regulatory and transactional work. Acevedo is especially knowledgeable regarding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the federal regulations covering protection of individuals’ health care information. New HIPAA regulations have recently been issued, which will require significant changes to be made by health care providers and others in the health care industry.

“We are ecstatic Lisa has joined our firm,” said Matt Murer, chair of the Health Care Group at Polsinelli, who also practices in Chicago. “Privacy and data security are key issues for our health care clients as they implement new strategies to compete in today's health care marketplace.”

Acevedo provides strategic counsel in the areas of other federal privacy laws, such as FERPA, the Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Records Regulation and related state laws governing the confidentiality of medical records and other highly sensitive data. She counsels clients on the most effective ways to implement interoperable electronic medical records systems and other technology involving health information. She has assisted clients through security breaches, and the notification process at the federal and state level.

She also counsels clients on compliance with regulations governing clinical research trials and negotiates clinical research agreements. She has advised clients on creation and use of data and tissue research repositories.

“It is a significant step for me to join the Polsinelli health care group,” said Acevedo. “This team of lawyers is recognized as one of the leaders in health care law in the U.S., and I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to the firm’s expanding list of health industry clients.”

Anthony J. Nasharr, managing director of the Chicago office for Polsinelli, echoed Murer’s comments on how the firm welcomes Acevedo’s depth of knowledge in areas that are of importance to clients, and her addition is part of a strategic plan to grow the Chicago office.

“We are expanding in ways that best serve our clients. Lisa’s work helping clients comply with HIPAA regulations will be especially useful with the revisions being made this year,” added Nasharr. “We’re glad she’s on our team.”

Acevedo earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law where she was Order of the Coif and served on the DePaul University Law Review, as case-note editor of the Journal of Health and Hospital Law, and as article and note editor for the DePaul Business Law Journal. She received her B.S. degree from Loyola University-Chicago. She is admitted to practice in Illinois.

Acevedo is an excellent source for reporters working on stories about:

  • Compliance with HIPAA and other federal and state regulations
  • The protection of personal information, including medical records, mental health records and others containing highly sensitive information
  • What to do when security is breached for employee personal information
