The Johnson County Bar Association recently selected Polsinelli Shughart attorney Greg L. Musil for the Justinian Award for Professional Excellence. Musil was honored at the Association’s annual Bench-Bar Conference Luncheon at the Ritz Charles banquet hall, 135th & Antioch, Overland Park, Kansas. The Justinian Award is the Association’s premiere award given to an attorney who has exemplified integrity, service to the community and legal profession, and warmth, friendliness and camaraderie.

“I’m humbled and honored,” said Musil, a litigation attorney who focuses on construction, energy and real estate litigation matters. “We don’t become lawyers for the recognition, but when it happens it is deeply rewarding. It means a great deal to me personally coming from my peers.”

The Justinian Award is named after the Emperor Justinian of the Roman Empire who instructed ten of his “wisest men to draw up a collection of Roman laws,” now known as the Corpus Juris Civilis, which means body of civil law. Musil, who served on the board of directors for the Johnson County Bar Association in the mid-1990s, is active in the business and civic community having served on the Overland Park City Council, as Chair of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce. He also ran for Congress in 2000 and served on the staff of United States Senator Nancy Kassenbaum Baker from 1983 to 1987. Musil is currently a member of the Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees.

“I think it’s important to lead and make a difference in the community, although I know my partners and my daughters will never consider me as an ‘Emperor,’” said Musil who is known not only for his legal acumen but also his likeability and sense of humor. “I was raised to lead by example and to work side-by-side.”

Musil graduated from law school from the University of Virginia in 1983, and since then has been serving plaintiffs and defendants in mediation, arbitration and jury trials for large corporations such as Learjet, Inc., and HCA Inc., and many small entrepreneurial businesses. He has tried cases in state and federal courts in Kansas and Missouri. In addition, he has litigated disputes in arbitration and before various state and local administrative agencies and commissions. A graduate from Kansas State in 1980, Musil is a devoted Kansas State fan.

Musil has numerous awards and distinctions. Some of the most prestigious include selection for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America 2005-2013, for:
