Kansas City intellectual property associate to assume post governing seven regions

Polsinelli Associate Melvin Sims has been appointed to the National Bar Association’s (NBA) Board of Governors, assuming the post as the Region VIII Director. Sims replaces Polsinelli’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion J. Danielle Carr following her two-year service in the role.  The NBA is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of predominately African-American lawyers, judges, educators and law students.

Sims is a member of the Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli’s national Intellectual Property Department and practices Medical Devices and Mechanical Engineering Patent Prosecution from the firm’s Kansas City office.

“We congratulate Melvin on his appointment to the NBA’s Board of Governors and are proud of him for assuming this national leadership role,” said Polsinelli Intellectual Property Department Chair Pat Woolley. “He brings great value to our IP Department and we know he will serve as the Region VIII Director with parallel dedication.”

Sims has been a long-time member of the NBA throughout his legal career and has served in leadership roles as a member of the organization’s Intellectual Property Division. As Region VIII Director, Sims will govern NBA affiliate chapters based in Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota to help drive the NBA’s regional and national initiatives.

“It’s an honor to serve as the Region VIII Director and on the NBA Board of Governors because of the organization’s rich history and reputation for representing the underserved, and dedication to supporting the development and careers of its membership,” Sims said.

Sims focuses his legal practice on client intellectual property asset protection, and his background and concentration on the development and commercialization of devices for cancer detection enables him to establish robust protection methods in disciplines including biomedical optics, computer programming, cancer biology and signal processing.

Sims earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, before obtaining his J.D. from Washington University-St. Louis School of Law.
