Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli announced today the addition of three leading intellectual property attorneys to its California offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The firm has one of the largest IP practices in the nation, including more than 165 attorneys, patent agents, scientists and other professionals across 21 offices coast to coast.
Franklin Kang, a principal with more than 20 years of experience in patent and other intellectual property litigation matters will chair the firm’s Korea Practice. Arriènne “Angel” Lezak and Shelton Austin have joined the firm’s national Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Patent Prosecution Practice, with Lezak joining as a principal and Austin as counsel.
“With the addition of Franklin, Angel and Shelton, the firm is able to continue to expand our presence along the West Coast,” said Fabio Marino, managing partner of Polsinelli’s Silicon Valley office and chair of the firm’s national Intellectual Property Litigation group, who joined the firm in December together with fellow IP litigators Nitin Gambhir, Teri Nguyen and Barrington Dyer. “All three of these attorneys bring with them strong intellectual property backgrounds and will be valuable advisors for our clients navigating complex IP issues.”
Kang counsels clients throughout the United States and Asia with particular emphasis on patent litigation before U.S. federal courts and the International Trade Commission. In recent years, he has successfully litigated some of the most significant and high-profile patent cases and complex arbitration matters. A native Korean speaker, Kang counsels clients on vital cross-border litigation and transactional matters, and guides them through all stages of litigation, negotiations, transactions and investigations.
“Polsinelli’s California presence is dynamic and growing,” Kang said. “The firm’s cross-border practice capabilities will be beneficial to my clients and serve as a great platform for Korean companies interested in doing business in the United States.”
Lezak, who will also be based out of Polsinelli’s Washington D.C. office, is a former patent examiner and a registered patent attorney who has an extensive background in the arts and music. Using her experience both within and outside of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, clients rely on Lezak’s ability to overcome prosecution hurdles, develop and manage patent portfolios, and analyze existing patent families to determine portfolio strategies based on the value and strength of pending and acquired claim sets.
Austin, also a former patent examiner, focuses his practice on intellectual property law, with an emphasis on strategic patent portfolio development and analysis. He regularly prepares and prosecutes patent applications in a variety of fields, including wireless communications, video coding, image analysis, computer generated imagery (CGI) animation, home automation, network security, software, electronics, and medical devices.
“Shelton and I are proud to join the outstanding intellectual property attorneys at Polsinelli,” Lezak said. “The firm’s growing footprint in California, coupled with its impressive national presence, will enable us to best serve our clients throughout the technology industry.”
Last month, the firm’s Intellectual Property Department and several of its attorneys earned recognition in the 2018 IAM Patent 1000, a prestigious guide that identifies top patent professionals in key jurisdictions around the world.
Kang joins Polsinelli from McGuireWoods. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California – Los Angeles, summa cum laude, and his J.D. from Cornell Law School. Both Lezak and Austin join Polsinelli from Kilpatrick Townsend. Lezak received bachelor’s degrees from the University of Rochester, the Eastman School of Music, and Purdue University, with distinction; her master’s degree from Boston University; and a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Austin received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, cum laude.
