Judy becomes the fourth female to hold the position in organization’s 128-year history

Polsinelli Shareholder Mary Jane Judy has been appointed by Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Sly James as the new President of the Board of Kansas City Parks and Recreation Commissioners. Judy becomes the fourth female president in the organization’s 128-year history, having served as a commissioner since 2013.

Judy is a member of Polsinelli’s national Real Estate practice and specializes in complex real estate transactions. She represents clients in commercial leases, as well as acquisitions and sales of real property, often as a component of larger asset purchases or sales. Judy specializes in leading large portfolio transactions and advises health care clients on unique regulatory issues related to their real estate holdings.

“I am eager to serve as President of the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, and to continue to serve alongside my fellow commissioners and the Parks Department staff that are so devoted to our parks.” Judy said. “It’s an honor to work with others that are so passionately committed to maintaining Kansas City’s world renowned fountains, community centers, golf courses, and our historic park and boulevard system.  I look forward to being strategic and innovative as we work to continue to improve the quality of life, health and wellness of Kansas Citians.”

Kansas City’s Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains over 12,000 acres of parkland, including 221 parks, 158 miles of trails and bikeways, 144 ball diamonds, 122 sculptures and monuments, 105 tennis courts, 60 ball diamonds, 48 fountains, 47 shelters, 30 tennis courts, 29 lakes, 24 aquatic facilities, among many others. Each year, the Department coordinates, manages and operates hundreds of special events.

Judy will lead the five volunteer members of the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners in bi-monthly meetings and work with the Director and Deputy Director on organizational operations, administrative functions and governance, to ensure quality programming and services are provided to the community. Prior to her six-year tenure on the Board, Judy previously served as Chair of the City’s Liquor Control Board of Review.

“Mary Jane has been essential to the successful work of our Board,” said Terry Rynard, Deputy Director of Kansas City Parks and Recreation and incoming Director beginning January 2019. “Her leadership skills, strong relationships and experience all made her a natural choice for president.”

Judy’s civic involvement is robust. She currently serves on the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Executive Women’s Leadership Council, and sits on the boards of the Committee for County Progress, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and the University of Missouri School of Law Tigers ’06 Scholarship program.  She has previously served on the Kansas City Museum Foundation board and as a mentor for the Chamber’s PowerConnections program.

For the past three years, Judy has been recognized on the Kansas & Missouri Super Lawyers’ “Rising Star” list and this year was included among the Best Lawyers in America published in U.S. News and World Report. In 2016, Ingram’s Magazine named her a “40 Under Forty” recipient. In 2014, she was selected for inclusion in Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s “Up & Coming” list.  Judy is a member of the Missouri and Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA).
