Firm earns Law Firm of the Year Award from Legal Aid of Western Missouri for its commitment to providing pro bono legal services to those with little or no income in Western Missouri

Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli was recently recognized for its commitment to and participation in Legal Aid of Western Missouri’s Volunteer Attorney Project (VAP).

VAP provides free legal assistance from volunteer attorneys in private practice to those with little or no income. At the 20th Annual Justice for All Luncheon this month, Polsinelli received the Robert C. Welch Volunteer Attorney Project Award for its longstanding and dedicated partnership with Legal Aid. As a VAP partner, Polsinelli and its attorneys accept case placements – pro bono – often with unusual circumstances or emergency timelines.

Last year, Polsinelli accepted more than 15 cases from Legal Aid of Western Missouri and attorneys in the firm’s Kansas City office performed 10,320 pro bono hours for the year. Some projects included:
  • More than 20 attorneys represented clients in the Adopt-A-Neighborhood Project
  • Worked on an emergency guardianship case that enabled a refugee to authorize a life-saving surgery for her disabled brother
  • Quickly executed Power of Attorney for a client whose mother suffered from a stroke and was only able to communicate with fingers
  • Worked on numerous limited guardianship cases, which allowed guardians to enroll Kansas City-area children in school this past year
“All of these cases were handled exceptionally by Polsinelli attorneys last year,” said VAP Director Latricia Scott Adams of Legal Aid. “The firm’s level of teamwork and camaraderie is inspirational. We know we can count on the Polsinelli team to serve our clients well and often, and we are honored to recognize the firm with our Volunteer Attorney Project Award.”

Polsinelli Shareholders Blake Reeves and Brendan McPherson serve as the liaisons between the firm and VAP. In the last year, they ensured that a Polsinelli attorney took nearly every referral from VAP.

“Our firm believes in doing the right thing for those in need, and our culture embraces pro bono service,” Reeves said. “Our commitment to VAP is one of many ways our attorneys are providing access to justice for those who don’t have the means to support themselves legally. I’m proud of our firm’s dedication to VAP, and the ongoing excellent client service provided by our attorneys.”

Through the VAP partnership, Polsinelli has partnered with Legal Aid to provide pro bono services for the Adopt-A-Neighborhood Project since its inception in 2015, demonstrating the firm’s long commitment to economic development and empowerment for progress in low-income, distressed neighborhoods within the Kansas City urban core.

“Throughout the years, we’ve worked on numerous matters to assist the Key Coalition Neighborhood Association revitalize its neighborhood and empower numerous residents,” McPherson said. “Our attorneys also helped Key Coalition save the Nile Valley Aquaponics project, obtain non-profit status for the community foundation that runs the Aquaponics project, and secured a lease for the foundation to have a teaching center. I look forward to helping this organization further advance its mission.”
