Boulware will be recognized at The Missouri Bar Foundation’s annual awards luncheon Sept. 26
Long-time Polsinelli shareholder and trial attorney R. Dan Boulware is to receive the Missouri Bar Foundation’s Purcell Professionalism Award, which honors Missouri lawyers who have shown outstanding professionalism.
Boulware will be recognized during The Missouri Bar’s Annual Meeting at its Missouri Bar Foundation & Public Service Awards Luncheon Sept. 26 in St. Louis. The Purcell Professionalism Award is presented to two Missouri attorneys every year who demonstrate an exceptional degree of competency, integrity and civility in both professional and civic activities. A member of Polsinelli’s national Commercial Litigation practice, Boulware manages the firm’s St. Joseph, Mo. office and the firm’s contingency fee practice.
“Dan is an exceptional litigator with years of experience as lead trial counsel for large, high-profile cases,” said Litigation Department Chair Russ Jones, Jr. “But what makes Dan such a special attorney is his stand-up character and his professional approach to his trial work. He garners the utmost respect from the courts, his colleagues and his clients. We admire Dan’s strong commitment to civic and community efforts to improve the legal industry and the St. Joseph community.”
A Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers since 41 years of age, Boulware is recognized by his peers among the top one percent of all trial attorneys in the country. As a commercial litigator, he has recovered millions of dollars for his clients through trial and settlement. Boulware’s experience spans a wide range of civil disputes: contract and tort actions, bankruptcy, adversary proceedings, health care litigation, oil and gas litigation, antitrust, civil RICO, insurance coverage disputes, director and officer liability disputes and intellectual property disputes. He recently secured victory in a high-profile, mass-action lawsuit for flooding against the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the case Ideker Farms et at v. United States of America.
“To be recognized by the Missouri Bar Foundation and my peers with the Purcell Professionalism Award is particularly gratifying as the award recognizes a lifetime of practice,” Boulware said. “I am flattered, humbled and deeply honored to receive this award. I hope with this award I can inspire my peers to always act with the utmost integrity and civility in representing clients and working with colleagues, as well as encourage them to give back to the communities in which they serve.”
A notable member of his St. Joseph, Mo. community, Boulware’s civic involvement dates back 30 years with cofounding the Rainbow Coalition, a political action group that supported the St. Joseph Public Schools in passing increased tax revenue for local schools. He has been a champion for organizations supporting the arts, local youth enrichment, public schools, children’s theater, youth worship groups and youth sports, to name a few. Boulware served as a 2Lt. in the United States Army Reserves for six years and is a strong supporter of the United States military.
Boulware has chaired a number of community capital campaigns, including those for his church and Missouri Western State University (MWSU). The R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues is held each fall at MWSU in his honor, bringing in a long list of distinguished speakers. This fall will be the 25th Convocation. In 2012, MWSU bestowed on Boulware an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.
In 2003, Boulware and his wife Dale were the recipients of “The Hope Award” given by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid-America Chapter, in recognition of outstanding community and philanthropic service and leadership.
Boulware has earned a lengthy list of recognitions throughout his legal career, jumpstarted with the Lon O. Hocker Memorial Trial Lawyer Award presented by the Missouri Bar Foundation when he was 36 years old, recognizing him as one of the outstanding young trial lawyers in Missouri. He is an Advocate in the American Board of Trial Advocates, has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® in Commercial Litigation since 2005, was named a Benchmark Litigation “Local Litigation Star” last year and was recognized among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by The National Trial Lawyers.
Boulware earned his bachelor’s and J.D. from The University of Kansas and served as a member of the KU Greater University Fund Advisory Board and as former President of the St. Joseph Chapter of the University of Kansas Alumni Association.
