Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli welcomes scientist Catherine M. Guzzo to its national Intellectual Property Department, continuing its momentum of IP growth in the northeast. Guzzo joins Polsinelli’s expanding Boston office as a member of the firm’s national Biotechnology/Life Science Patent Prosecution Practice Group.
Utilizing her research-driven background in chemistry and biochemistry, Guzzo provides strategy and guidance to biotechnology, patent prosecution and life sciences industries. Leveraging this experience, Guzzo supports client matters involving patents and technological innovations at Polsinelli, which has one of the largest IP practices in the nation.
“Kate’s clinical research in biochemistry and deep understanding of scientific and technological disciplines strengthens our ability to deliver client value across coasts,” said Polsinelli Intellectual Property Department Chair Patrick Woolley. “Kate’s addition is part of our continued focus on IP growth in Boston and the greater northeast to meet the increasing client needs in this region’s thriving IP legal space.”
In April, growing in sync with this demand in the northeast, Polsinelli added Shareholders Michael T. Siekman and Y. Jenny Chen, integrating the duo’s experience in IP, litigation, licensing and biotech to serve the complexities of client matters.
“Kate is a great addition to our Boston team and national IP Department, as she adds depth to our research capabilities within the chemistry and biochemistry spaces in particular,” said Siekman. “As we experience continued needs for complex IP matters, it is important for us to have a well-rounded, robust team of specialists, and we are excited to again work with Kate, who will certainly contribute to our growth strategy.”
Prior to joining Polsinelli, Guzzo spent four years supporting biotechnology and chemistry patent prosecution clients at an IP boutique. Previously, she conducted her postdoctoral research in the Department of Cancer Biology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Johns Hopkins University. She derived a distinct interest in aminoacyl tRNA synthetases—enzymes that attached amino acid to tRNA— and uses this understanding of cellular protein synthesis to inform her approach to client matters.
“Polsinelli’s robust IP Department and dedicated regional focus immediately attracted me,” said Guzzo. “I am eager to collaborate with Polsinelli’s impressive team of IP leaders, and look forward to providing solutions that help our clients capture, leverage and monetize their technological advancements.”
Guzzo earned a Bachelor of Arts from LaSalle University in Philadelphia before obtaining a Ph.D. with a concentration in Chemistry from Georgetown University. Throughout Guzzo’s undergraduate career, her work was recognized on a national scale, earning the highly-regarded Undergraduate Award by the American Institute of Chemists Foundation and the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Cancer Institute Training Grant program.
In addition to her collegiate achievements, Guzzo was presented with the Postdoctoral Travel Award during the 2010 Ubiquitin Drug Discovery and Diagnostics Conference and the Postdoctoral Travel Award by the American Society of Molecular Biology in 2013. Guzzo utilized a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the American Association for Cancer Research to further refine her industry knowledge and is currently a 2022 J.D. candidate at the Suffolk University Law School in Boston. She remains active as a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the Advancement of Science.
