The duo brings decades of experience in biotechnology, patent prosecution and life sciences
Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli welcomes new Shareholders Michael T. Siekman and Y. Jenny Chen to its national Intellectual Property Department. With a focus on continued Intellectual Property growth in the northeast, Siekman and Chen join Polsinelli’s Boston office, and are members of the firm’s national Biotechnology/Life Science Patent Prosecution Practice Group.
With more than 25 years of legal experience, Siekman focuses his practice on a range of IP matters, including patent prosecution, licensing and post-grant proceedings and litigation. He brings deep experience developing patent portfolios to Polsinelli, which has one of the largest IP practices in the nation. The firm advises clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
“Michael brings a sophisticated practice to our team and his broad skillset of IP law – from litigation to patent prosecution and even biosimilars – will be of great value for our clients,” said Polsinelli Intellectual Property Department Chair Patrick Woolley. “Our Boston office continues to serve some of our clients’ most complex IP matters. We are pleased to continue our expansion in that region to better serve the growing demand for IP legal matters there.”
Siekman regularly provides legal counsel in litigation matters involving Hatch-Waxman, generic drugs and post-grant solutions for biosimilars. He has successfully contested cases before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the European Patent Office, and advises clients on IP-related aspects of mergers & acquisitions, other financing and licensing programs. His legal highlights include defending IP diligence on behalf of a biotechnology client in an acquisition valued at $6.5 billion. He obtained seminal patents in gene therapy, phage display, yeast display and the transgenic production of proteins in animals. He also prosecuted one of the most widely licensed biotechnology patent portfolios with projected milestones and royalties of $700 million annually.
“Jenny and I are eager to collaborate with our new colleagues at Polsinelli, one of the leading intellectual property law firms in the country, and immerse ourselves in the firm’s culture of collaboration and client service,” said Siekman. “The firm’s national platform and strong regional focus on IP in the Boston area attracted us, and we look forward to continuing to grow our presence in the northeast and beyond as we strive to remain a leader in IP law.”
Chen focuses her practice on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution and portfolio strategy, opinion work, due diligence and post-grant matters. Those include interference, inter partes review and reexamination. She counsels clients in areas of biological, medical and pharmaceutical sciences to develop patenting strategies protecting clients’ technology and products worldwide. Chen has a deep scientific background, having earned a PhD in Pharmacology and Molecular Biology; she has vast experience in antibody, cell therapy, gene therapy, biosimilars, diagnosis and pharmaceutical formulations. Chen has prosecuted a patent portfolio covering an antibody product that has been approved in various countries.
“Jenny’s deep knowledge in biotech and life sciences, along with her educational background in the medical field, create such a strong blend of skills that will be invaluable to our clients,” said Woolley.
“Jenny’s practice is a nice addition to our Boston office and our national IP portfolio as we continue to serve the great demand for biotech and life sciences work in the northeast.”
