Polsinelli is pleased to announce Principal Arriènne (Angel) M. Lezak has been promoted to Vice Chair of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Patent Prosecution Practice Group.
“Angel is a well-respected patent attorney that adds a vital perspective to our Intellectual Property Department,” said Polsinelli Intellectual Property Department Chair Patrick C. Woolley. “Not only has she built a successful legal career for herself at the firm, she is a tireless advocate for the advancement and development of others.”
A former Senior Patent Examiner for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and a registered patent attorney, Lezak is known for her competitively high allowance rate as she advises clients across the technology industry. Using her experience both within and outside of the USPTO, clients rely on Lezak’s ability to develop, and manage patent portfolios, analyze existing patent families, and creatively and strategically overcome prosecution hurdles. She interviews every case, a strategy she developed as an Examiner when she realized how infrequently Applicants’ representatives interviewed cases and how often she would repeatedly see the same attorney’s or agent’s name on matters for the same or different Applicants.
Lezak’s strategic, big-picture way of thinking creatively is enhanced by her broad background in both engineering and music. She has multiple degrees in music composition, including a BMus degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music, and an MMus degree from Boston University. After law school, she earned her third bachelor's degree, in Computer Technology from the Purdue School of Engineering and Science, while working as a Trademark attorney. Following Purdue, she moved from Indiana to Virginia to gain valuable experience as a Patent Examiner for several years before returning to private practice.
Lezak is also Co-Chair of Polsinelli’s Women in Intellectual Property (WIP) Group, and with the support of the IP Department Chair Pat Wooley, she enjoys “paying forward” the privilege of mentoring and creating opportunities for women to succeed in the IP space. Polsinelli has been committed to its WIP initiative to develop, support, and retain its female attorneys, agents, and scientists. While women make up only 0.7 percent of those registered to practice at the USPTO, 36 percent of Polsinelli’s registered USPTO practitioners are female IP attorneys.
A well-known figure in the IP community, Lezak is the Program Chair for the 31st Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference, Co-Chair of the PLI Patent Fundamentals Bootcamp, and member of multiple committees for the American Bar Association and American Intellectual Property Law Association. She received an individual ranking on the 2021 IAM Patent 1000 for Prosecution in California and Washington, D.C.
“I am deeply honored to be promoted to Vice Chair of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Patent Prosecution Practice Group,” said Lezak. “I am grateful that Polsinelli continues to support creativity and diversity in IP, and to promote this area of law in a way that is inclusive to everyone.”
