The Asian American Bar Association of Kansas City (AABAKC) has selected Judy Yi as president effective January 1, 2010. Yi is a shareholder at Polsinelli Shughart PC and a member of the firm’s labor and employment practice. Her term as president of the AABAKC is for one year. Previously, she served as president-elect/treasurer of the organization.
“It is quite an honor to be chosen to lead the Asian American Bar Association for the coming year,” Yi said. “As our association hosted the Central Region Conference for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association last year, we hope to further foster connections among the Asian legal community throughout the Midwest.”
Founded in 2004, the AABAKC is a non-profit association of Asian Pacific American (APA) attorneys, judges, law professors and law students. Its mission is to promote justice, equality and opportunity for Asian Americans, and to foster professional development, legal scholarship, advocacy and community involvements in the metropolitan Kansas City area.
As president, Yi said she was interested in furthering educational programming support for local APA law students in the area. AABAKC currently awards two scholarships each year to law students at the local law schools.
“I would like for our association to work more closely with groups such as the Asian American Chamber of Commerce, and develop such synergistic opportunities for the APA legal community in Kansas City,” she said.
In her labor and employment law practice at Polsinelli Shughart, Yi focuses on managing and minimizing workplace risks associated with multi-state and federal regulatory compliance issues. If a matter becomes adversarial, she represents management in agency investigations and lawsuits. She regularly provides advice pertaining to employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, collective actions, breach of contract, covenants not to compete, drafting personnel policies, management training, defamation, unfair labor practices, and protection of confidential and trade secret information.
Yi graduated with her J.D. in 2001 from the University of Minnesota School of Law. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1997.
In addition to her membership with AABAKC, Yi is also a member of the Missouri Bar, the KC Metropolitan Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Association for Women Lawyers of Kansas City and the Dartmouth Lawyers Association.
