Polsinelli Shughart PC will host the Delegation from the Committee on Internal Affairs of the German Bundestag, the national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany. Members of this German congressional delegation will meet with business leaders, government officials and lawyers at Polsinelli Shughart October 14, 6-8:30 p.m. at the CityScape Tower, 1 East Washington Street. Members of the German Bundestag are in Arizona for several days to study various alternatives for handling immigration, security and anti-terrorism issues. The German Bundestag delegation visiting Polsinelli Shughart includes eight congressmen and congresswomen who represent the full spectrum of Germany’s various political parties.

“We are very excited to host the German delegation in our new offices at the CityScape Tower,” said Marty Harper, managing partner. “The visit once again places our great city and state on an international stage.”

Harper, the chairman of Mackrell International, a global network which provides clients with legal resources worldwide, including Germany, just returned last week from leading Mackrell’s European summit in Vienna, Austria.

“Our relationships in Europe and the U.K. are stronger than ever” said Harper “There is tremendous interest in doing business, not only in the U.S. generally, but specifically in Arizona, which, because of its growth and a perception that it has a dynamic business climate which welcomes global participation, is getting a lot of attention.”

International commerce is important to Phoenix as well as Polsinelli Shughart. Several of Polsinelli Shughart’s Phoenix attorneys’ practices include an international focus, including corporate and securities partner Michael Patterson. He serves together with the German Consul on the International Leadership Council of GPEC, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

“While Polsinelli Shughart’s client relationships with Mexico and Canada remain strong, the reach of its international business and practice in Phoenix continues to grow with Europe, the Pacific Rim, Central and South America, and the United Kingdom.,” said Patterson.

Just in the last several months, Phoenix has been successful, through the efforts of GPEC and others with international vision, in attracting a number of significant global businesses to locate operations here. These international businesses are bringing hundreds of new jobs for Phoenix and helping Arizona jump start its global prominence in strategic sectors such as healthcare, biotech, solar and other green and renewable technologies, like algae. Polsinelli Shughart is thrilled to be part of these dynamic sectors and the growing international role of Phoenix.

The reception at Polsinelli Shughart is one event of the delegation’s multi-day visit to Arizona, which will also include a heavy schedule of meeting with numerous federal and state officials and business leaders, and a visit to the border region. Although a number of the parliamentary delegation are proficient in English, the German Bundestag group travels with translators who will be available to help reporters interview its members.
The Phoenix office of national law firm Polsinelli Shughart just relocated to the new 27-story CityScape high-rise in downtown Phoenix on September 27, 2010. The move is a result of the explosive growth of the Phoenix office which tripled in size last year to 54 attorneys.

Harper and Patterson are excellent sources for reporters writing about:

• Growing the local economy internationally, as Harper is the chair of Mackrell, a global network of law firms, and Patterson serves on GPEC’s International Leadership Council and the Arizona-Mexico Commission.
• How law firms assist both domestic and foreign clients with “inbound” and “outbound” international legal and business issues, such as starting Arizona or foreign operations, raising capital and handling international disputes.
• How local Phoenix business leaders and groups such as GPEC, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, are working to attract international businesses to Phoenix and to foster the growth of new economic sectors such as healthcare, biotech, and renewable/green technologies, including solar.
