Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli Principal Stephen Nichols has been appointed to serve as Chair of the California-Southern Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL.) The ACTL is an invitation only fellowship of preeminent trial lawyers in the United States and Canada founded in 1950. Membership can never be more than 1 percent of the total lawyer population in any state or province.

In his role, Nichols will assist the ACTL and its Southern California membership in maintaining and seeking to improve the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics, and the administration of justice through education and public statements on important legal issues.

“As a trial lawyer, I am honored to chair the Southern California Committee of the College,” said Nichols, a nationally recognized litigator known for his successful handling of complex and high-risk toxic tort and product liability cases. “The ACTL’s mission to support the independence of the judiciary, trial by jury, respect for the rule of law, access to justice and fair and just representation of all parties to legal proceedings is directly aligned with what I believe to be fundamental to the integrity of our trial system.”

Nichols maintains an exceptionally high success rate in jury trials. He relies on his understanding and experience in the trial process from both the plaintiff and defense perspective to assist clients, including some of the world’s most well-known manufacturers and suppliers of chemicals, construction materials and other products, in litigating cases that involve significant potential exposure to those clients.

Nichols is one of a handful of Southern California liaison attorneys selected to work with the coordinating judges of all asbestos cases pending in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, to assist in making recommendations on ways to continually improve the case management process. Nichols also volunteers his time serving on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Litigation Complex Courts Committee which meets with the Los Angeles complex court judges at their behest to discuss litigation procedures and other issues that impact the court.  He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
