Polsinelli welcomes associate Abby Bonjean to the firm’s Health Care practice. Bonjean spent the last six years as an investigator with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) investigating large breaches, evaluating organizations’ responses to breach incidents and negotiating settlements – including a $5.5 million enforcement settlement, the largest such settlement to date. She joins shareholder Lisa Acevedo and another former OCR attorney, Kathleen Kenney, on Polsinelli’s HIPAA/Health Information Privacy and Security team.

Based in Chicago, Bonjean brings her experience to help health care organizations implement measures to avoid data privacy breaches and manage other HIPAA compliance issues, while achieving their business objectives.

“The health care industry, like many sectors, sees a continuing rise in cyber threats, and, at the same time, the regulatory environment is changing rapidly,” said Matthew Murer, Chair of the firm’s top-ranked Health Care Practice Group. “Abby’s arrival to Polsinelli could not be more timely or beneficial to our team and our clients.”

2016 saw the OCR increase its activity in auditing and enforcement, taking more enforcement actions than in years past, newly launching investigations into breaches affecting fewer than 500 individuals (these “Under 500 Breaches” historically had not been regularly investigated) and announcing that it will begin on-site audits of hospitals in 2017.

“Despite these changes,” Bonjean said, “Polsinelli’s multi-disciplinary Health Information Privacy and Security Team remains well-positioned to advise clients on how to protect their data, handle breaches, and respond to government investigations. I’m excited to be part of it.”
