The National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) honored national law firm Polsinelli at its 2014 Exemplar Award Dinner. Polsinelli earned the prestigious Beacon of Justice Award for its commitment to The Children’s Law Center Minor Guardianship Program and the innovative delivery of pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford counsel. The firm was one of 25 law firms selected from across the United States for this distinction. Recipients were recognized for their devotion of significant pro bono time and resources and their dedication to creating and implementing innovative strategies that improve life outcomes for low-income individuals.
Approximately 400 attorneys, general counsel and advocates gathered for the NLADA Exemplar Award Dinner to pay tribute to those lawyers who give of themselves to improve the quality of representation for people who are unable to pay for legal assistance and to salute outstanding individuals who set an example by their dedication, achievement, leadership and vision. The event was held at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington D.C.
“I am deeply honored that our firm has been recognized for its significant commitment to pro bono services,” said Polsinelli Pro Bono Chair Troy Froderman, who attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the firm. “Attorneys across our firm are making a significant positive difference in the lives of people who might not otherwise be able to access legal representation.”
Anthony Merrill and Christina Kelly, two Polsinelli attorneys who volunteer their time with the Children’s Law Center, as well as William Blakely, Lauren DeSantis-Then, Daniel Donohue, and Andy Wright of Polsinelli’s Washington D.C. office attended.
Earlier this year, Polsinelli was named by the Children’s Law Center (CLC) which is a program of Community Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program in Maricopa County, Arizona as its Law Firm of the Year. The firm was selected for its volunteer efforts in connection with the Minor Guardianship Program that assists vulnerable children whose parents are not able or willing to care for them. CLC nominated Polsinelli for the NLADA Beacon of Justice Awards based on the firm’s pro bono commitment to provide innovative services that impact low-income individuals, communities and under-represented needs of children in Arizona as well as the firm’s overall commitment to pro bono services. Polsinelli attorneys provided over 16,000 hours of pro bono service in 2013 alone.
“I am delighted that Polsinelli was selected for a Beacon of Justice Award” said Roni Tropper, Esq., Children’s Law Center Program Coordinator. “The firm’s commitment to pro bono services, including the staffing of one of our two guardianship clinic locations where we provide critical services to families in need, is exceptional and worthy of recognition.”
In 2013, Polsinelli made national news, including coverage on “60 Minutes,” for its work with the Arizona Justice Project gaining the release of Louis Taylor, a wrongly convicted man who spent most of his adult life in prison. In addition to the giving of thousands of pro bono hours, Polsinelli also employs full-time pro bono attorneys to provide representation in a variety of civil and criminal cases. Attorneys also accept court-appointed assignments on behalf of indigent clients in the areas of child abuse and neglect, family disputes, and some types of criminal law. The firm consistently assists with juvenile and child advocacy cases in the many of its 19 offices.
