The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) of Kansas City recently selected national law firm Polsinelli and Hotel Sorella as recipients of the 2014 Cornerstone “Special Recognition” Award for their respective roles in the $135 million mixed-use development known as Plaza Vista.
The Cornerstone Awards were established more than 25 years ago to “recognize companies and organizations that contribute to the growth of Kansas City’s economy.” The EDC’s selection committee determines honorees “based not only on investment and new jobs, but on the project’s effect on issues like education, quality of life, and the project’s impact on the community and surrounding neighborhoods.”
Plaza Vista – a nine-story, 235,000-square-foot development home to Polsinelli’s national headquarters – accommodates 450 total employees, including more than 250 attorneys, and was recognized by the EDC for creating approximately 100 new jobs.
During the presentation of the Special Recognition Award, David M. Harrison of VanTrust Real Estate recounted Plaza Vista’s long path to completion, including “reprogramming” the site with Polsinelli, demolition, re-permitting, and construction of the Class A-plus office space and 132-room Hotel Sorella. Polsinelli began occupancy of the building on-time on November 1, 2013, and Hotel Sorella opened the following week.
“The project had a very long history to it, but phenomenal participation by all the team members, and really spearheaded by the commitment of Polsinelli,” Harrison said.
Sporting Innovations was also recognized by the EDC as winner of the LaunchKC Award for their redevelopment of the historic Lowe & Campbell building in the Crossroads Arts District. The building – which previously served as manufacturing space for the Hanna Rubber Company – includes six floors of office space, as well as a newly renovated event space on the top floor.
