Former fighter pilot is a leader in drone regulations, technologies and operations

Polsinelli, an Am Law 100 law firm, announced today shareholder Thomas Gemmell joined its Chicago office. Gemmell focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and is a leader in the emerging technology field of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones.

Gemmell represents clients in intellectual property litigation matters involving aerospace and weapon systems technologies, automotive systems, RFID technologies, medical devices and building products, among others.  

He also counsels clients from a range of industries on drone regulations, technologies and flight operations in the National Airspace System, developing flight and safety procedures manuals and operations programs, and obtaining waivers and exemptions to enable and enhance clients’ commercial use of drones. 

Polsinelli’s Intellectual Property and Technology Litigation Practice Vice Chair Gary Hood, also based in Chicago, echoed Gemmell’s comments, adding, “Tom’s practice really is a great fit for what we’ve been building. He’s an outstanding litigator, a forward thinker and business strategist.”

Gemmell served in the U.S. Air Force as an F-15 Mission Commander and Instructor Pilot. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and his juris doctor degree from Stanford University Law School. He lives in Evanston, Illinois with his family.
