Six months after the practice group nearly doubled, Polsinelli is Positioning as a Powerhouse

Continuing its systematic expansion, Polsinelli, an Am Law 100 firm, announced today a significant recognition of its growing Intellectual Property practice.

Just six months after 44 attorneys joined the firm from Houston-based boutique Novak Druce Connolly Bove & Quigg LLP, Polsinelli was recognized as a Top Patent Firm.

IPWatchdog built its just-published Top Patent Firm rankings based on the total number of U.S. utility patents issued in 2015. Although Polsinelli had not reported combined figures with Novak Druce's 2015 filings, the total for the national practice would rank the group at No. 11, with a combined 2309 patents.

“We took special efforts at Novak Druce to build a diverse and dynamic platform,” said Greg Novak, who serves as vice chair of Polsinelli’s Intellectual Property practice group. “It was our goal to break into the top 10 patent prosecution firms in the country, a designation we believed would help us serve clients globally in all intellectual property matters, not just prosecution, but building on our strong litigation, licensing and start-up practices as well. Having now combined efforts with Polsinelli accelerates this plan, and all of us at Polsinelli are seeing the benefits we are able to deliver daily to our clients.”

In March, the Polsinelli Intellectual Property practice became one of the largest IP practices in the nation, with more than 120 attorneys, patent agents and scientists. At that time, Novak and Tracy Druce, who serves as vice chair of Polsinelli’s Intellectual Property practice group with Novak, joined the firm as partners to lead Polsinelli’s Houston office. Polsinelli is also growing its Boston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco offices. Headquartered in Kansas City, the firm has 19 offices across the country.

"We continue to focus strategically on building our national Intellectual Property practice, a priority service area at the firm,” said Polsinelli Chairman Russ Welsh. “This recognition affirms our commitment to serve clients across industries in the full range of IP and IP Litigation services."

2015 saw a near-record number of patent cases filed in U.S. district courts. Polsinelli’s cross-functional group of attorneys is organized to serve clients needs in a variety of industries, including the most complex issues facing technology and high tech companies, bioscience and life sciences companies, animal science, medical devise, pharmaceutical, chemical, software and business methods, data, privacy, health care IT, and any of a variety of other high tech industries. Polsinelli attorneys counsel Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized public and private companies, start-ups, universities and not-for-profit research institutes.

As practice group chair, Pat Woolley has helped to grow the firm’s Science and Technology practice since its inception. Q. Todd Dickinson, a former undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, is also a member of the Polsinelli team.

“Our team’s collective expertise includes both domestic and foreign issues and we are able to work in a variety of areas including patents, trademarks, copyright, licensing, litigation, trade secret litigation and business advice and guidance,” Woolley said. “Our strategic geographic expansion aligns attorney experience with client matter – despite geography – and our attorneys collaborate to ensure clients are best served.”

Earlier this year, the Polsinelli Intellectual Practice Group was:
  • Named one of four “IP Litigation Powerhouses” in the 2016 BTI Litigation Outlook Report based on interviews with more than 300 general counsel at companies with more than $1B in revenue.
  • Included in the Corporate Counsel IP Whack-a-mole: The 2016 Patent Litigation Survey, which ranked firms by the number of patent lawsuits for which they were listed as counsel in 2015. In that list, Polsinelli ranked No. 24, improving by 14 spots over 2015.
  • Nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report in Technology  Law, Biotechnology Law and IP Litigation.
Polsinelli is one of the fastest growing law firms in the nation. Since 2010, Polsinelli’s overall attorney count is up 74 percent, and revenue growth is up 145 percent.
