Polsinelli welcomes Marla G. Berger as of counsel in the Real Estate Finance Practice where she will advise clients on secondary market transactions, including single asset, conduit and single-borrower loans, and complex balance sheet transactions.
“We are excited to have Marla join our team and her practical, hands-on business experience, in both the legal and business fields, brings another unique perspective to our clients,” said Polsinelli Financial Services and Real Estate Department Chair Dan Flanigan.
As a real estate executive for 11 years, Berger headed up proprietary and capital market lending at Capmark Finance Inc., formerly known as GMAC Commercial Mortgage, where at different times she directed underwriting, closing and was head of portfolio asset management. A former partner at a New York law firm, Berger developed form loan documents and guidelines for conduit programs, as well as closing sophisticated real estate loans on all asset classes. She also has expertise, both as a lawyer and a real estate professional, in asset management, workouts and foreclosures.
“Real estate finance is competitive and challenging, and lawyers need legal and business acumen to negotiate and close the deal the way the client wants: promptly and profitably. Polsinelli really understands and embodies that. The culture is a good fit for me and I am excited to practice here,” Berger said.
The American Lawyer Magazine in its June 2013 issue recognized Polsinelli as the fastest-growing law firm in America.* In 2013, the firm moved up to the 69th position in The National Law Journal’s ranking of the largest U.S. based law firms. New York has been part of that growth. Newly expanded and relocated in 2013, Polsinelli attorneys work in financial services, real estate finance, health care and other commercial real estate, bankruptcy, and intellectual property litigation, offering the experience and insight clients need to keep pace with ever-changing markets.
Berger earned her law degree in 1986 from the University of Michigan Law School. She earned her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983 and was Phi Beta Kappa. She is a member of the State Bar of New York.
