Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli is pleased to announce that three of its attorneys have assumed leadership roles with the National Bar Association (NBA), including on the organization’s national Board of Governors, general counsel and within a region. The NBA is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of predominately African American lawyers, judges, educators and law students.

Polsinelli Senior Partner Philip G. Hampton, II has been named Associate General Counsel of the NBA. Associate Dean of The George Washington University Law School, Alfreda Robinson, NBA president, named Hampton to this position on July 26. He will be responsible for corporate governance issues and serve as President Robinson’s “local counsel” as he is located closely to the organization in Polsinelli’s Washington, D.C. office. In his role as Associate General Counsel, Hampton brings relevant experience as he previously served as general counsel of the Washington Bar Association, a local affiliate of the NBA, from 2015-2018.

“I am truly honored to serve as Associate General Counsel with the NBA, one of the country’s most prestigious and reputable legal associations,” said Hampton. “I thank Dean Robinson for her trust in my legal counsel and look forward to working closely with her as we guide the strategy and governance of the association’s bright future ahead.”

Melvin Sims, associate and member of Polsinelli’s national Intellectual Property Department, has been re-elected to the NBA’s Board of Governors where he will serve as Region VIII Director for the second-consecutive year. As Region VIII Director, Sims governs Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota by performing duties and responsibilities in accordance with the NBA’s bylaws.

“For the past year, I’ve had the honor to serve my local and neighboring regions, representing Polsinelli and our commitment to diversity and inclusion in this role,” said Sims. “I’m proud to serve alongside our other board members who are hungry for change, propelling and inspiring me to do the same in the year ahead.”

Polsinelli Shareholder Anthony Springfield, who practices Products Liability & Toxic Tort litigation at Polsinelli, joins Sims in the 2019-2020 term as Region VIII Treasurer. In this position, Springfield will manage and oversee the financial affairs of the Region, controlling and safeguarding its finances.

“Serving as Treasurer Region VIII is a great privilege, and one I approach with the same spirit and energy I give to my clients,” said Springfield. “I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Polsinelli through this position with such a highly-regarded organization that champions African American legal professionals in their career pursuits.”

The NBA is organized around 23 substantive law sections, 9 divisions, 12 regions and 80 affiliate chapters throughout the United States and around the world. It represents the interests of approximately 65,000 lawyers, judges, law professors and law students.

“We are proud to support members of our IP Department in their roles on behalf of the NBA and look forward to the impact that Melvin and Philip will make at the regional and national levels,” said Polsinelli Intellectual Property Department Chair Patrick Woolley. “Melvin’s reappointment to the NBA’s Board of Governors is a testament to his leadership, going beyond the call of duty to uphold the bylaws of the organization. Likewise, Philip’s appointment as Associate General Counsel is a reflection of his trusted and outstanding legal skills, from which the NBA will continue to benefit.”

“Anthony possesses the level of detail a Treasurer requires, demonstrating his commitment to a cause with unwavering dedication and the ability to anticipate needs and engage in their fulfillment,” said Polsinelli Litigation Department Chair Russ Jones, Jr. “The value he brings to our litigation team will be felt in equal magnitude in his role on the Board.”
