Former roles in education, marketing and legislation have prepared Dan Cranshaw with the legal, business, and communication skills to effectively evaluate and understand a client’s business. He works hard to gain a clear understanding of a company’s make up – the people, the processes and the specific business goals – enabling him to provide timely strategic planning and mitigate risk.

Whether through litigation, alternative dispute resolution, strategic consultation, or a simple assessment of an insurance policy, Dan works collaboratively with corporate clients and/or their boards to ensure companies can successfully defend claims, secure coverage, and grow their businesses.

Focus areas of Dan’s practice include:
  • Defending products liability and warranty claims
  • Commercial litigation
  • Risk management
  • Toxic tort litigation
He has been involved in class actions in state and federal courts throughout the United States and has successfully dealt with all aspects of class action litigation, including pre-certification dismissals and summary judgments, class discovery, class certification and de-certification, and claims administration.

Dan has successfully resolved claims for individual and corporate clients through alternative dispute resolution, including a favorable settlement of a significant breach of contract dispute. In addition to his litigation experience, Dan is well-versed in the development and execution of discovery motion strategies and strategic case management techniques. He works on national trial teams, where he plays an integral role in pre-trial discovery and investigation.

Ranked in Benchmark Litigation and recognized by the American Board of Trial Advocates Award for Outstanding Performance in Trial Advocacy, Dan also places a high importance on giving back to his community. A former Board member of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, he has also sat on or chaired the Boards of major charities in the Kansas City area, including Swope Health Services, Don Bosco Community Centers and the Salvation Army of Kansas City.

  • Settled products liability claim for 18% of initial demand through alternate dispute resolution ("ADR").
  • Successfully resolved $850,000 breach of contract claim involving multiple parties, multiple geographic locations and entrenched competing interests.
  • Successfully negotiated a 4-way settlement between an international company that provides environmental control products and services for the commercial and military aviation industries, a U.S.-based aviation company, and two subrogated plaintiffs resolving millions of dollars in claims arising out of the alleged defective design and manufacture of airplane heat exchangers. The settlement not only resolved pending federal litigation, but it also inoculated the international company from future claims.
  • Structured, drafted, and negotiated 75 promissory notes in favor of commercial client in process of winding down business activities.
  • Served as Third Party Administrator (“TPA”) for product manufacturer facing a major product recall and hundreds of consumer claims, ensuring that insurance companies provided timely coverage defense.
  • Represented as national coordinating trial counsel for product manufacturer facing hundreds of product liability claims in venues across the country.
  • Obtained defense verdict on behalf of multinational farm equipment manufacturer in $800,000 products liability action.
  • Served as regional counsel for multinational products manufacturer in Western states, defending multiple claims in multiple venues.
  • Participated in defense of multinational food company against several hundred nuisance claims arising out of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (“CAFOs”).
  • Pursued fraud claim on behalf of client that resulted in favorable settlement without filing litigation.
  • Obtained partial summary judgment in federal court on Missouri Merchandising Practices Act (MMPA) claim, resulting in favorable settlement for client.
  • Achieved dismissal of international client from multimillion dollar asbestos litigation without payment.
  • Achieved favorable settlement in asbestos litigation moments before jury selection was to begin.
