Matthew Smith helps clients protect and maximize the value of their intellectual property through his transactional intellectual property practice.

With more than 25 years’ experience, Matthew advises on a wide range of intellectual property matters, including global trademark portfolio management, advertising and branding, licensing, custom software development and IP consulting on mergers and acquisitions. He also handles trademark and copyright clearance, prosecution, maintenance, exploitation and enforcement. 

Matthew counsels clients on the selection, use and registration of trademarks in the United States and internationally. His clients include solo inventors, small businesses and multinational corporations. He also regularly negotiates a wide variety of intellectual property agreements, including trademark purchase and sale agreements, license agreements, publicity rights agreements and social media/influencer agreements. He also advises clients on trademark, copyright, publicity rights and entertainment-related new media issues.

Drawing on experience as both outside and in-house counsel, Matthew brings a practical, business-focused perspective to his work. He advises clients across a variety of industries, including highly regulated sectors such as health care and financial services, and provides guidance aligned with their operational and strategic goals.

He also represents clients in domain name disputes and has handled proceedings before the World Intellectual Property Organization and the National Arbitration Forum.
