Stephen Dew focuses his practice on patent prosecution, counseling and related transactional matters, helping clients maximize the value of their intellectual property. Drawing on his extensive engineering background, he advises on a wide range of technologies, including financial technology, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, digital signal processing, mechanical devices and medical devices.

Stephen has extensive experience performing intellectual property due diligence for mergers and acquisitions and has an in-depth knowledge of open-source software licensing. He combines his technical background with practical legal insight to help clients navigate complex IP issues, assess risk and develop strategies that align with their business objectives.

He has gained unique insight into clients’ business goals through in-house secondments at major technological companies. In his first role, he served as product counsel, assessing legal risks associated with new products, including open-source software, and providing guidance on licensing matters. In a second role, he evaluated patent portfolio licensing obligations in connection with participation in technical standards organizations, providing strategic advice on IP compliance and risk management.

Prior to entering a private practice, Stephen worked as an engineer, in both technical and customer-facing roles. Previously, he held the position of Compiler Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor (now NXP). He also held various Applications Engineer positions at Freescale and StarCore LLC. In these roles, he optimized customers’ software and provided technical training to customers. Prior to law school, Stephen also worked as a consulting technical expert for patent infringement cases.

Stephen is conversational in French and has a basic knowledge of German. With a strong desire to give back to the legal profession, Stephen is an enthusiastic mentor to many attorneys, law students and others considering law school.
